Sincerely Yours: YOURS0143 höstvisa
I spoke with Mikael once at a house on, I think, Marlborough Road near Cortelyou Road in my old Brooklyn neighborhood. Jens Lekman was there playing one of those post-concert shows that he made a habit of doing during his post-Night Falls Over Kortedala tour. Mikael told me his favorite Sarah Records group was, I think, St. Christopher (but don’t hold me to that if it turns out it was Another Sunny Day or the Sweetest Ache). He was smoking a joint and we really didn’t talk that much but I liked him, or I liked his music and projected that onto him. I can’t remember for sure if I told him “(Lack Of) Love Will Tear Us Apart” reminded me, in a good way, of C&C Music Factory, or what his response might’ve been if I did. Anyway, the Honeydrips’ live show presents Mikael as just such a karaoke singer— he has a guitar strapped across his chest, but he doesn’t play it, singing along to a computer instead— and it made me grin throughout, although I think most of the Webster Hall crowd didn’t know what to make of him. I’m as disappointed that we won’t be getting a second album from him as I probably can be by any music-related news in these cynical days (hint: I’ve received one comment and one e-mail suggesting that “everybody knows” Henning is in ceo, but I lack the Swedish to confirm or disconfirm this not-so-startling information; I love White Magic regardless, of course).
